Flood damages properties in Kaduna State

 


Numerous houses were submerged in Asikolaye, Kaduna South Local Government Area, damaging residents' property, reports the Nigeria News Agency (NAN).


The flooding, which took place on Monday evening after a downpour, continued until Tuesday morning and has driven many people out of their homes.


Some of the residents told NAN that once every two years, the flood happens.Aisha Mohammed, whose house had been submerged, said she tried to save some of her property without success.


She has called on the government to provide some support to her and other disaster victims.


Ibrahim Shehu said he lost and was forced to kill many domestic animals.He said he heard SEMA 's warning of the flood but he had to go nowhere else.


Maimumatu Abubakar, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency of Kaduna (SEMA), who went around the town to assess the extent of the damage, advised residents against building houses near river banks.


She said there was no report of deaths from the floods or missing persons."We expect the flood to subside by the end of the day."


Secretary, Red Cross Kaduna State, Sunday Awulu said nine people have been rescued while several others have refused to vacate for fear of stolen their belongings.


NAN recalls that SEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), warned of imminent floods in some parts of the state and advised people living along the banks of the river Areas vulnerable to transfer to secure territory.
