D'banj rape victim strikes at 'illegal detention'

Seyitan Babatayo, a woman who was accused of sexual assault by Nigerian singer, have appealed to police about what they say was her unlawful arrest Tuesday.

Earlier this month Babatayo claimed the singer Oladapo Oyebanjo, popular as D'banj, raped her in 2018. Mike Ozekhome, a lawyer acting in the interests of D'banj, says his client rejects the charges and has written to Ms Babatayo informing her that, unless the accusations are revoked, he will bring legal proceedings.

Ms Babatayo says she was arrested by police earlier this week, and granted bail. Her attorneys say they do not know why she was detained and have lodged a grievance.

Tommy Ojoge-Daniel, a lawyer acting on Ms Babatayo 's behalf, says his client reported the alleged rape to police on June 8th. She says the 2018 incident happened at a Lagos hotel.

Police spokesman did not reply to calls. Demonstrations have taken place across Nigeria in recent weeks following reports of a number of high-profile rape accusations. Governors from Nigeria's 36 states united last week to launch a gender-based violence state of emergency.
