Lisbon has been set to conduct Champions League final stages

Following reports in recent days from several of the European media. An official announcement is expected when UEFA's Executive Committee meet next Wednesday, June 17, by videoconference.

The final of this season's Champions League was set to take place in Istanbul at the end of May before the last-16 stage of the competition was stopped in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic that spread across europe.

For the Polish city of Gdansk the Europa League final was organized. Since the quarter-finals onwards all games will be played in both competitions as one-off matches. The quarter- and semi-finals are usually played over two legs.

Four second-leg matches are still to be played in the Champions League round of sixteen, with Juventus still due to host Lyon, Manchester City slated to play Real Madrid, Bayern Munich defending a 3-0 lead against Chelsea and Barcelona's tie to Napoli poised 1-1 from Italy's first leg.

Those matches might be played on the weekend of 8th and 9th August, according to Bild, before the quarter-finalists move to the Portuguese capital. Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Atalanta all had qualified just before the paused competition. The Europa League is facing a bigger backlog, with just six of the last 16 having played first legs and none of the second legs.
Portugal's qualifications for hosting a mini-tournament in the Champions League are boosted by the fact that it was not as heavily impacted by the pandemic as other Western European countries, though it does not have any clubs left in the game. At the start of this month the Portuguese top-flight continued with matches being played behind closed doors.

Lisbon has many stadiums, including Benfica's 65,000-capacity Estadio da Luz, which featured the 2014 Euro 2004 and Champions League finals, and the nearby 50,000-seater Estadio Jose Alvalade — home of Sporting — which was also used in Euro 2004 and in the 2005 UEFA Cup final.
