Jurassic Park Becomes No. 1 movie in the United States Thanks to Drive-Ins, almost 30 years after release

According to Deadline, the action-adventure returned to the top box office position in the United States almost three decades after the release of the first Jurassic Park film. With most movie theaters closed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, cinephiles took in movies at drive-ins, relying on showing classic movies as many new releases opted for on-demand premieres or pushed their debuts in anticipation of the reopening of cinemas.

Steven Spielberg's 1993 hit this past weekend played at 230 theater sites and reportedly earned $517,600. Jaws from Spielberg also filmed the weekend of Father's Day, earning $516,300 at 187 places. The next installment of Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: Conquest, stopped filming in March amid COVID-19 concerns and plans to resume shooting in London next month with protocols for coronavirus analysis in place. For example, when on set, someone who is not acting in a scene would be forced to wear a mask.

"There has been a lot of contact," star Bryce Dallas Howard said about health and safety measures on SiriusXM's EW Live. "They are going up and down."
Domination, which also includes Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and Chris Pratt, anticipates release in June 2021.

While states across the U.S. continue to push forward with reopening plans, by the end of the month at least 31 states will be able to open cinema theatres. Chains such as AMC and Regal Cinemas would allow staff and customers to wear masks when reopening. Regal opens on July 10, followed by AMC on July 15. Last week, Cinemark began welcoming back visitors to Dallas, with the rest of its locations aiming to open again beginning July 3rd.
