Academic Staff Union of Universities has accused the Center for World University Ranking's unimpressive ranking of Nigerian universities for the Federal Government's failure to give priority to education.
The union said that even if government had accepted its numerous calls to provide an enabling environment for education , particularly in tertiary institutions across the country, the ranking was just two
Nigerian Universities, Ibadan University , and the University of Nigeria making the top 2,000 in the world should have been great.
Speaking of the ranking, Professor Ayo Akinwole, chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), complained that the two universities that currently hold first and second national rankings in Nigeria could not top 1,000.
Referring to other universities in Africa, the union claimed that South Africa's first thirteen universities made the best 2,000 universities, while seven of them made the world's best 1,000 varsities.
The University of Ibadan is currently ranked 8th in Africa by this list, followed by the University of Western Cape , South Africa (1,158) ranked 9th on the globe.
ASUU noted that the ranking had vindicated ASUU 's struggle to get the government to commit no less than 26 percent of its national budget to education lamenting that the best the Muhammadu Buhari government has done is to cut the budget year to about 6 percent at the moment.
According to him, ASUU has drawn the attention of the government and the Nigerians to the rot in the tertiary education system and has been proved correct by the federal government 's 2012 Needs Assessment.
As revealed in the ranking, personal relentless efforts of academic research performance at the University of Ibadan and the University of Nigeria have been taken to place Nigeria on the world map.
Professor Akinwole noted that the only variable that allowed two Nigerian universities to rank among the best 2000 universities is in relation to the study results where the University of Ibadan had 1,101 with a total score of 69.4 while Nsukka had 1805 and a total score of 66.2.
ASUU has been striking to get government to resolve issues of revitalization fund, academic allowances won, university visiting panel, the proliferation of state varieties and governance problems within them, and the swift termination of the 2009 agreement renegotiation.
Professor Akinwole warned Nigerians to join ASUU in ensuring that more funds are injected by the federal government to revitalize public varieties so that Nigerian universities can compete effectively globally and that their graduates will be respected with their certificates around the world.
"While one or two things we have to say about the indices used in the ranking, the fact is that academics in Nigeria are still using their own blood to make Nigerian varieties work because the government has become incompetent and evil."
"They have no interest in it again because they're sending their kids abroad. A serious government will not cut the education budget and leave the National Assembly 's budget untouched to restore its complex that has no direct impact on the country.
"It is a strong example of where this Government 's focus lies. During COVID-19 Nigerian researchers contribute the meager amount they are paid to develop ventilators while lawmakers break the preventive counseling law.
