Resumption of schools: Lagos gives teaching skills on post COVID-19



The Lagos State Government has tasked teachers in public and private schools with re-evaluating and intensifying their mentoring skills as a positive learning resource in preparation to cope with post-COVID-19 classroom demands in anticipation of the imminent resumption of schools after lockdown. During a maiden webinar version, the Tutor-General / Permanent Secretary, Lagos Education District 1, Barrister Margaret Solarin, handed the charge: Eko Educators series, 1.0. Coordinated for teachers at the State Post-primary school.

Solarin said the mentoring skills became necessary especially for students who, following the pandemic, could not maximize the benefits of online teaching via radio and television organized by the state government. During her presentation, she gave the admonition entitled: "tutoring As a Tool for Learning and Development," organized for school teachers, via the online platform for Microsoft Teams.

Solarin clarified that while post-COVID-19 school standards should require a much higher dispensation of teachers mentoring skills and experience, they should also demonstrate stamina and patience in order to cope with the manifestations of students still lagging behind and unable to take advantage of online teaching opportunities when they return.

She ensured that when teachers make concerted efforts to present themselves as credible sources for offering solutions to student issues and helping to solve their difficulties, there will be a high degree of trust in them that will eventually improve student learning and growth. Solarin reiterated that the overall success of the mentoring process and the provision of superior information, skills and experience to teachers in the school sense primarily depends on theEarlier, Dr. Yetunde Anibaba, a senior lecturer at the Lagos Business School who presented a lecture on "Personal Agility," urged teachers to be more ICT compliant in order to illustrate that they are adaptable to change and also become more important in the greater scheme of life. proper use of language when communicating with and engaging with their students.

She also cautioned that the uncout choice of words and languages should be avoided in order to obtain positive responses from the students and as such, no student should be called "dullard without prospects." She emphasised the need for teachers to constantly expose themselves to relevant acquisitions of knowledge and skills in order to sharpen and broaden their expertise in quality teaching methodology that would further enhance students ' potential to become more successful and worthy leaders of tomorrow for the betterment of the nation as a whole.

"In addition to mentoring students, respective heads and senior school tutors will advise and mentor the state government's newly recruited teachers and direct them with their experience and skills to better deliver service," she urged.

The EKO Educators Webinar Series 1.0 was attended by the Education Minister, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo in the capacity of a special guest, the Teaching Service Commission of the Chairman State, TESCOM, Mrs Elizabeth Olabisi Ariyo who was the chief host and the TESCOM Permanent Secretary, Mrs Toyin Idowu who operated as the moderator for the webinar.
